Nancy McCartan

A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 19, at Saint Luke Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Gary, celebrant. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at a later date in Cemetery of the Gate of Heaven in Hawthorne, NY.

Born May 8, 1925 in New York, New York, Nancy was a daughter of the late William Joseph Downes and Mary Anne McGowan Downes. She was a graduate of St. John’s University and taught in New Jersey for many years. After raising her family, she returned to work as an executive secretary with Emery Worldwide in Connecticut. Nancy retired to North Carolina, where she has been an active member of St. Luke’s Parish in Mint Hill. She was a member of the Third Order Dominicans. She served the board of elections for Lake Park, and was a member of Lake Park SAGES.

In additions to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas J. Downes, and her sister, Mary D. Downes.

A beloved mother and grandmother, every fiber of Nancy’s being was saturated with goodness and love. The center of her life was her deep faith and her devoted family. She lived a joyful life in loving service to others.

She is survived by her spouse, Charles P. McCartan; daughters, Maura McCartan Morse and husband, David, of Mint Hill, and Deirdre McCartan Cristante and husband, Frank, of Waxhaw; grandchildren, Terrence C. Morse, David J. Morse, Brian J. Cristante, Caitlin A. Cristante and Matthew S. Cristante; her brother, Laurence W. Downes and wife, Helen Hart Downes of Hernando, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
