Born April 16, 1924 in Jefferson, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Key Havner, Sr. and Ethel Testerman Havner. Following high school graduation, Lucy moved to Charlotte and shared an apartment with four other women, who remained lifelong friends. It was in Charlotte where she met her future husband, Ralph Kiker. They were married in 1947. They lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Dunwoody, Georgia before retiring back to Mint Hill. She and Ralph were happily married for 51 years.
Lucy was an active member of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church and the Miller Sunday School Class. She enjoyed watching golf and Wheel of Fortune, and reading the newspaper from front to back. Lucy would attend her high school reunions and in recent years attended her 75th year reunion. She was a very independent person and was passionate about working in her yard and flower gardens.
In addition to her husband and parents, Lucy was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Key Havner, Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Hall of Charlotte; two nieces, Carletta McIntosh of Belmont, and Patricia Bowman and husband, Chris, of Thomasville, Georgia; two nephews, Danny Hall and Joe Hall, both of Charlotte; a loving sister-in-law, Carolyn Horne of Denver, North Carolina; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Ralph’s nieces and nephews, who held a special place in her heart.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 am Saturday, February 4, at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 11. Entombment in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum will be private.
The family offers their most sincere appreciation to Lucy’s caregivers and the nurses and staff of Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate care, and her loving neighbors who would come to her aid at a moment’s notice.
