His family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 20, at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Arnie Corriher officiating. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
Mickey was born July 25, 1944 in Charlotte and was raised in the Hickory Grove area. He was a 1962 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and after graduating, Mickey served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mickey began a lifelong career in the asphalt industry with Rea Construction Company. He later worked with Crowder Construction, before retiring from the Asphalt Division of Blythe Construction Company. Mickey was passionate about life and lived it to the fullest. He loved to drag race and won numerous awards for his racing and his sportsmanship. He was an avid golfer, gambler and loved to fish with friends. Mickey was also a dog lover and is preceded in death by his best four-legged friend, Mr. Winston. Mickey leaves behind a large number of family and friends that he loved deeply and who loved him. He is preceded in death by his very dear grandparents, John Burdette King and Viola Stegall King, and aunt, Jane King Brown.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Pat Smith; his daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Ken Book of Harrisburg; his son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Jessica Smith of Charlotte; his parents, Betty and Bill Freligh of Concord; and his step-brother, Bill Freligh of Ladson, SC.
