Kenneth Compton Wooten, Sr., 85, of Concord, NC, formerly of Charlotte, went home to his Lord February 4, 2016. The only son of Seth and Mildred Wooten, Ken was a shoe repairman and retired owner of Branner's Shoe Service. A master of repairing "soles," he pledged his life to reaching "Souls" for Christ.
Those fortunate to cross paths with Ken know he was a devoted Christian, committed to studying and seeking understanding of the scriptures. Ordained a Deacon at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in the early 60s, he served in many capacities. Most recently he led the Bill Silvers Sunday School class and was a teacher and honorary member of the Dave Harris Sunday School Class.
He carried the Gospel to those who are often least served, in Grenada, China, Prison Ministries, and Jackson Training School for Boys.
In retirement, he continued his service through numerous weekly prayer groups he led or supported. Over the years, many have sought his counsel. Through Ken's hard earned knowledge of the scriptures, and his ability to connect with others, God touched many lives.
After his faith, he was committed to his family as a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather. Ken lived life to the fullest, and in all things he gave God the glory!
In addition to his parents, Ken is preceded in death by his sister, Becky Morris, and his son, Kenneth Compton Wooten, Jr.
Ken is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sally Grice Wooten; children, Sandi Durham, Elizabeth Wooten, Scott Wooten (Kathy), Cheri Garcia, and Susan McKee (Terry); ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Nancy Carter (Jack); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
The love and prayer of the Bill Silvers and Dave Harris Sunday School Classes comforted our family and sustained mom and dad in this time of sorrow and praise.
The Wooten family would like to specifically acknowledge the compassionate care provided by Dr. David Turner and the entire staff of Levine Cancer Institute of NEMC, and the caregivers of Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County. A special thank you to Adrienne and Holly for their obvious genuine concern for our dad.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:30 p.m. Friday at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Harrill and the Rev. Dr. Joe B. Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
