He was born on May 6, 1954 in Wilmington, NC to Jim and Betty Merritt.
Pete graduated from Edison High School, where he was known as "the machine" for his athleticism in track and field. He was then signed to North Carolina State University, where he was successful in track and field. He then proudly served in the US Coast Guard.
Pete later had two beautiful daughters, Courtney and Elizabeth, whom he was very proud of.
Pete is survived by his loving mother, Betty Merritt; his daughter, Courtney (Kevin) Samulik and his grandson, Cameron Samulik; his daughter, Elizabeth "Biss" (Trent) Kistler and grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Owen Kistler.
Pete was preceded in death by his father, James "Jimmy" Merritt, his baby brother, Michael "Mike" Merritt and his friend, George Ayers.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, August 13th, 2020 at Salisbury National Cemetery Salisbury, North Carolina.
