Doris was born on July 24, 1928 in Concord, NC to Ernest and Ruby Litaker. Doris went to Tech High, she graduated in the Summer of 1946. She created lasting friendships and remained close with a number of her classmates decades after she finished her high school career. She and her friends attended the “Tech High Lunch Bunch” the third Thursday of every month. A few of these friends actually lived at Aldersgate and kept her company in her early years in the community.
She worked at GMAC for 35 years following her graduation until she retired. She went on to marry the love of her life, George “Duck” Diehl, a stock broker for Smith, Barney, Harris & Upham, on April 30, 1955. Together they raised two daughters, Marion “Kim” and Karen. She was also an avid member of St. John’s Baptist Church and served as a dedicated member for upwards of 50 years. Mrs. Diehl was an active member of St. John’s Baptist Church as well as a member of the “Friendship” Sunday school class. After her retirement from General Motors she began volunteering her time for a few committees at the church.
Doris had a passion for cooking and gardening. Her yard and porch were filled with plants and flowers, all of which she cared for with the help of her sister, Carolyn. She always cooked for family events and no one ever left hungry when she was the one in charge of meals. She was very well known for her cooking and baking skills along with her quick wit, fashion sense, infectious smile, and her kind and compassionate spirit.
She is preceded in death by her husband George “Duck” Diehl, and her brother Frank Litaker. She is survived by her two daughters Marion Kimberly Diehl and Karen Diehl Williams, along with Karen’s husband, James Williams Jr. , and her only granddaughter Bailey Williams. She is also survived by her sister Carolyn Reed and three brothers Harry Litaker, Van Litaker, and Joe Litaker along with multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel with Dr. Dennis Foust officiating. A private graveside will be held at Evergreen City Cemetery.
