She was born in South Korea in 1934 to Sin, Soo Boom and Kwak, Bok-Im. She survived the Japanese occupation of South Korea which ended in 1945. She also survived the Korean War; however, her mother did not survive. Yong Tae completed middle school and worked at City Hall in Chung Joo City, South Korea. She married Yi, Chul U in 1953 and they had six children together before he died in 1969. She came to America in 1985 and lived on the farm in Aitkin, MN with her daughter, Mun Suk, and son-in-law, David. Eventually she moved to Minneapolis and lived at Cedar-Riverside with her two youngest sons, Yi, Sang Hun and Yi, Sang Min.
In 1989, they moved to Flushing, New York. In New York, she was highly active in Korean Community Service projects. In 1995, she received recognition for her outstanding contribution to New York City Parks as a volunteer. She also received recognition for her hard work and dedication at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in 1999 and completed participation in the Senior Community Service Employment Program from 1997 to 2003. Yong Tae became a naturalized citizen in 2000 in New York. She moved back to Minnesota in 2007 and eventually moved back to Ceder-Riverside at the Grace Place/Assisted Living Program at Korean Service Center. She was incredibly happy living at Grace Place and had many friends there. She encouraged further harmony and development as Yong Tae was elected Resident President in 2014. She was very responsible in everything she did and was a role model for other residents. She was respected by many people with her confidence and decisiveness.
Yong Tae is preceded in death by her husband Yi, Chul U in 1969; her parents and stepmother; brother Sin, Yong Gil; Son Yi, Sang Min; Daughter Yi, Mun Hee; Son-in-law Kim, Dong Hak.
Yong Tae is survived by her brothers Sin, Yong Joo; Sin, Yong Duk; Sin, Yong Ji all of South Korea; sons Yi, Sang Yoon (Kim, Jo Bok); and Yi Sang Hun both of South Korea; Daughters Yi, Mun Ja of South Korea; and Mun Suk Paulson (David) of Aitkin, Daughter-in-law Choi, Me Young of New York; six grandchildren; Yi, Joon Ho; Kim, Min Seok; Kim, Min Mo; John Paulson, Melissa Leonard, Ellen Yi; and four great-children.
A celebration of life will be held in South Korea at a later date, and she will be laid to rest in South Korea.
