Marvin Dean Nunemaker was born October 19th, 1932 in Laurel, Nebraska, the son of Beatrice “Hope” (Hoskinson) and Burton Henderson Nunemaker. He was baptized on January 8th, 1933 at the First Presbyterian Church of Laurel.
Growing up, he lived in Nebraska, Iowa, and Oregon. He played league softball and was on high school track and field and basketball teams. He played clarinet in the school band, was in Boy Scouts and a member of the YMCA. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, IA on June 9th, 1950.
In November of 1950 he joined the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves. He was called to duty, serving in the Air Force and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska until December 19th, 1952.
After the service, Marvin worked at a grocery store in Sioux City and met Sandra Jean Gaul. Marv and Sandy were married April 24th, 1954. They had two children while living in Sioux City, Lisa (1955) and Michael (1958). Marvin was working for Hess Motors when the company was bought out by Murphy Motor Freight and he transferred to Minnesota in 1959. Paula was born in 1960. Marvin and Sandy made their home in Fridley in 1961 where they lived together for the next 57 years, until February 2018 when Marvin moved into assisted living. During those years, in addition to working at Murphy, he went to computer school and became one of the early pioneers in computer programing, working for Kousisto, Froehlic, Borgfelt. Then he worked for Midland Co-op/Land-o-Lakes until he “retired” in 1996. He then worked part time at Target and Menards.
He served as president of the Midland Co-op Credit Union from 1982-2003. Marvin liked golf, bowling, fishing, camping and traveling (especially trips out west). He enjoyed working on home and yard projects while listening to the Twins baseball games on the radio. Marvin cherished time spent with his family. Even as his memory slipped away, he was cheerful, pleasant, and always happy to see visitors.
Thank you, friends and relatives, for your thoughts, prayers, and kindness. We especially want to thank the staff of the Harbors Senior Living for the loving care given to Marvin and their compassion towards him and our family. Also, thank you to Allina Hospice, Sunset Cemetery, and Wulff Funeral Homes.
