Kimberly Ann Carnel Goodwin, better known to her family and friends as Kim, passed away on December 31st, 2023 in Saint Paul. She was born on October 24, 1964 in Cannon Falls, Minnesota to Irene and Robert Carnel.
Kim was well known for her warm welcomes to all people, always taking the time to listen to their backgrounds and life stories. This trait was reflected strongly in both her educational and work achievements in civic planning and public policy throughout Minnesota. She helped to create and administer the Duluth Community Jobs Program during her time as a Senior Planner for the City of Duluth. As a diabetes advocate and a Senior Health Program Representative, she led stakeholder meetings to help guide the design and implementation of MDH’s Diabetes Plan. Outside of work, Kim gave back to the community around her through volunteering, donations, and advocating for refugees in the Twin Cities.
She cherished her time spent reading and writing poetry, gardening, birdwatching, and traveling. She adored the ocean, visiting San Diego and Martha’s Vineyard multiple times. Her adventures also extended internationally to places such as Russia, London, Paris, and Ireland. When back home in Minnesota, Kim frequently engaged in the arts and culture scene of the Twin Cities, visiting the Minneapolis Institute of Art and attending local concerts and plays. She loved the natural beauty around her, enjoying spring, summer, and autumn strolls along one of her favorite spots - the Mississippi River Boulevard. Her favorite symbol was the Tree of Life, a wonderful testament to her appreciation for the wisdom that we gain from the world around us. The Tree of Life embodied her personality through her caring and nurturing spirit. She found peace in being outside, stargazing, and always reminded those around her to find beauty in the everyday things.
