Doug was the youngest of 8 children. His siblings, Bill, Marion, Paul, Phil, Louise, Shirley, and Carol all preceded him in death. The family resided in Columbia Heights, MN.
Doug attended Columbia Elementary and graduated from Columbia Heights High School in 1955. He began working at a very young age delivering newspapers in his neighborhood. During high school and summers, he worked at Kassler’s Grocery store and Federal Lumber, where his father was employed as Foreman. Next, he completed his apprenticeship training to become a Journeyman Floor Coverer. He spent 35 years installing floors, mostly in commercial buildings in the Twin Cities. Later in his career, he was elected by union members to serve as Business Agent for Floor Coverers Local #596.
Shortly after high school, he met the love of his life, Ginger. The two were wed in 1957. That led to the start of their large family. Together they raised 5 children and were married for 67 years. They supported each other, their children, and grandchildren through good times and bad.
Doug had an extremely strong work ethic and worked long hours to provide and care for his family. Some of his interests included hunting, fishing, and chopping wood. In retirement, he spent time traveling and golfing. He also enjoyed woodworking; making cribbage boards, bird feeders, and planters. Additionally, he loved being outdoors; mowing, raking, and shoveling. He took delight in spending time with friends and family, as well as, telling stories from the past.
He is survived by his wife, Ginger; children: Pam (John), Doug, Cindy (George), Laura (Mike), Jason (Ann); grandchildren: David (Missy), Angie (John), Brandon (Lori), Blake (Ashley), Taylor (Drew), Michael, Meghan, Cody, Hailey, Morgan and Ryan; great-grandchildren: Victoria (Andy), Jada, Kate, Alannah, Jameson, Lillian, Maverick, Sophia, Jack and Eve.
A visitation for Douglas will be held Friday, April 4, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 2250 St Anthony Boulevard NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418, with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 pm. A committal service will occur immediately following the funeral at 1:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home & Sunset Cemetery.
