Allan had over 50 years’ experience as a clinical and research perfusionist that included clinical operation of the Heart & Lung By-pass machine and adjunct devices. He assisted in the development and operation of the heart-lung machine using the first application of a centrifugal blood pump, a design adapted for use as a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). He invented and patented several medical devices. Allan had a brilliant mind that was so helpful in understanding the philosophical interactions between the human body and cardiopulmonary bypass and mechanical bypass and mechanical circulatory support. He was known for his ability to make medical devices from garage sale treasures. The medical profession will miss his leadership and insight.
As Allan worked t0 extend and improve human life, he loved and respected nature and its creatures. His interests included wildlife preservation and animal rescue programs.
