Mr. Pitts was born in Gantt, Alabama on September 1, 1927 to Audrey and H.H. Pitts. He is survived by his son Martin Pitts, and wife Norma, of Montrose, Alabama, his daughters Shirley Pitts of Pace, Sally Sims and husband Mike, of Marianna, Florida and Susie Barber and husband Alan, also of Marianna, Florida, and his sister Judy Elmore of Florala, Alabama.
He had a host of grandchildren- Colin and Cori Pitts, Jordan Wahlquist (Page), Kristina Spikes (Elijah), Jessica Caldwell (Jared), Perry Ledbetter (Amanda), and Evan and Anna Barber. Mr. Pitts also had 9 great-grandchildren.
Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pitts, his son Russell Pitts, his parents Audrey and H.H. Pitts, and his brother Rupert Pitts.
A graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) with a degree in architecture. Mr. Pitts was employed by Southern Prestressed Concrete for 27 years. He worked as a structural engineer designing concrete bridges and buildings. Later, after working another 10 years, he retired from the Florida Department of Transportation.
Mr. Pitts was a long-time member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pace. He also enjoyed attending social gatherings with other seniors. He had other close friends, as well.
Mr. Pitts was quite a character. He was a highly intelligent man who was a voracious reader of a large variety of literature. He collected cars, calculators and calendars, among many other interesting items. He enjoyed a cherry milkshake and thrift shopping. Healthy and vigorous until his death, Gerald still did 25 push-ups every night well into his eighties.
Gerald enjoyed good conversation, and had a dry, quirky sense of humor. He will be fondly remembered by many.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 1-2 pm at National Cremation & Burial Society with a celebration of life to follow at 2 pm.
