Gretchen's life was a tapestry woven with love, kindness, and vibrant interests. She had a deep appreciation for music, finding joy in the Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge (before they were cool), John Denver (when he was), The Clash, The Cure, Jazz, Cuban music, John Mellenkamp, and even Styx. Her eclectic taste reflected her lively spirit and zest for life.
Nature was Gretchen's sanctuary. She found solace and joy in gardening, relishing the warmth of the sun at the beach, and hiking under cathedrals of trees and monuments of red rock. Her love for the outdoors was a reflection of her gentle and empathetic heart.
A seeker of wisdom and beauty, Gretchen was an avid reader and explorer. She found solace and inspiration in art, literature, meditation, and philosophical contemplation. Her curious mind and thoughtful soul endeared her to all who knew her.
Gretchen's selflessness knew no bounds. She had a unique ability to "see" people and make them feel valued and appreciated. A thoughtful and engaged cheerleader for those around her, she took great care in curating individual notes and gifts that were special and meaningful to her loved ones.
In addition to her diverse interests, Gretchen was deeply devoted to her family. She leaves behind cherished memories with her daughter Gabriella Calvitto, partner Greg Schroeder, her mother Alice Beinhauer, her sister Elke Bennett and her husband Dennis, her brother Dieter Specht and his spouse Chris, her niece Casper Bennett, nephew Dennis Bennett, and her "assumed daughters" Sunbul and Alaura.
A visitation to celebrate Gretchen's life will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes - Miller Place, located at 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place, New York 11764. A funeral service will take place during the visitation. An interment service will take place on Friday, March 1, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Sea View Cemetery, situated on North Country Rd, Mt. Sinai, New York.
Gretchen's unwavering love, compassion, and zest for life will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her spirit live on in the hearts of those she touched.
As Gretchen was a champion of many causes, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make contributions to a cause that you choose to champion yourself.
May her travels be easy and may she rest in eternal peace.
