Dr. Wayne Edward Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday August 2nd, 2023. He was born on January 15, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Edward and Mildred Smith. On June 9, 1964, Wayne married his high school sweetheart Barbara Ann Bridge, daughter of Gordon and Dorothy Bridge, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they raised a family comprising of seven children: four boys and three girls. They lived a life filled with a love unlike any other.
Wayne is survived by his wife and sweetheart of 60 years, Barbara Ann Smith – Along with their children: Bradley G. Smith; Kyle W. Smith; Derrick M. Smith; Kimberly A. Chamberlain; Gary E. Smith; Lauri A. Baird; Jennifer L. Dain and 17 grandchildren.
Wayne was deeply loyal and loved his family. He sacrificed joyfully, working hard in his dedication to their care, well-being and support.
Wayne graduated from Highland High School in 1960. He was elected to student body vice president his senior year, and also excelled as an honor student and athlete. He played varsity football. But it was his stellar talent at track and field from his sophomore to senior year which earned him a full ride scholarship to the University of Utah.
He was always humble about his many extraordinary accomplishments.
From 1961-1962 Wayne served as a full time missionary for, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Irish-Scottish Mission. Toward the end of his mission, he was called to serve as assistant to then mission President Stephen R. Covey.
In 1966 Wayne earned a Bachelor of Science with an Honors degree in Zoology from the University of Utah. During his time as an undergraduate student, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
In 1970 Wayne graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine with his Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.) with honors. After finishing Medical School, he completed a three-year residency program in the United States Air Force specializing in Dermatology. Wayne was Board Certified in Dermatology and Pathology, granting him the professional credential of Dermatopathologist. He was also a member of the following professional associations: The American Academy of Dermatology and The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
Being a Medical Doctor was not just a profession for Wayne. He truly loved helping people. He had a soft spot in his heart for his patients going above and beyond to provide the best care.
Wayne was a military Veteran serving in the United States Airforce from 1970-77. He enlisted as an officer at the rank of Lieutenant. Seven years later, upon his honorable discharge, he was promoted to the rank of Major. During his military career, Wayne and his family were stationed at the following installations: Travis Air Force Base, California; Lackland Air Force Base, Texas and, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. These were memorable and fond times for both Wayne and Barbara. Wayne was proud of his military experience serving as a Medical Doctor and often expressed gratitude for the opportunity he had to serve his country.
Wayne loved the process and activity of learning. He was a voracious reader who had a photographic memory. Wayne was a passionate book collector, with a particular interest in history and paleontology. He was also an avid collector of rare fountain pens.
This is not a goodbye; this is until we meet again.
