Scott was born in Salt Lake City, UT on May 15, 1984 to Christopher and Kathy Rudy West, to their great delight. His congenital myotonic muscular dystrophy and club feet complicated life a little, but his devoted mother and father gave him every opportunity. Chris and Kathy loved traveling and taking Scott out into nature: fishing, camping, and learning about the world. Scott attended the Reid School and graduated from Skyline High School in 2002. Scott loved his time with the Boy Scouts and he earned his Eagle Scout award in 2002. Scott even worked his own newspaper route through high school, carrying on the West family tradition.
His mother Kathy passed away in 1998, and Scott expanded his family in 2000 when Chris married Marie Bennion Shellum. Her children Cameron and Jessica joined the family too; having a brother and sister at last meant so much to Scott.
Scott tracked the weather and he kept close tabs on the forecast. Summer meant fireworks to Scott, and he loved going to see as many fireworks displays as possible. Scott enjoyed creating travel plans even if he never made the trip. Riding the bus, going to the library, and watching game shows on TV filled his happiest hours. It was a really great day when Scott could go bowling or get an ice cream shake at Shivers. Scott always dressed up as an M&M for Halloween and he went trick-or-treating into his 30s.
Scott became a permanent fixture in the deacons quorum of the East Mill Creek 6th ward. He first helped his dad as an assistant scoutmaster, and then he just stuck around because he liked being with the guys so much. He loved Christmas and buying gifts for just about the entire neighborhood. Scott was especially kind with gifts for his nieces and nephews. Scott volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Utah Food Bank.
He mourned the passing of his father Chris in 2022.
Scott is survived by his family: Marie West; Cameron and Liz Shellum with their kids Grace, David, Emma, and Jane; and Jessica and Geoff Green with their kids Katelyn, Addison, and Gavin. He is also missed by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Scott is celebrating in heaven with his parents Chris and Kathy West; nephew Benjamin Green; and grandparents Mel and Erminie West, Allen and Bernice Rudy, and Don and Elaine Bennion.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the East Millcreek 6th Ward, 3103 E. Craig Dr. in Salt Lake City. A viewing will be prior to the funeral from 10-11:15 a.m. A live stream of the funeral can be found with his obituary online at wasatchlawn.com. Scott will be buried at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in Millcreek, Utah. We invite you to wear green to the services, in honor of Scott’s favorite color.
