It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ross Junior Bevan. He peacefully left this world on Saturday, April 29, 2023. Ross was 99 years old, having celebrated his 99th birthday on February 15. He passed quietly from natural causes with his wife and family present.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the life and mission of our Savior Jesus Christ. He served faithfully in many callings—including High Council, Temple Worker, Teacher, Bishop, and many others. If someone ever needed help or a job done, he was always willing to step up and get it done. His life was one of service.
Ross was born in the Bevan family home on Feb 15, 1924, in Tooele, Utah, to Amos and Nellie Bevan. He grew up in Tooele and graduated from Tooele High School.
Ross was one of 14 children. He had 7 brothers and 6 sisters. His mom died when he was ten years old. Every child had jobs to do. The girls worked very hard to clean the house, take care of the kitchen garden, cook the meals, wash the clothes, can fruits and vegetables, and sew clothes. Amos and his sons worked on the farm. They did not have tractors but farmed the old-fashioned way with horses and plows, sometimes working 10-12 hours a day.
Ross told a story about having lunch with his brothers while working on the farm. He said they talked about how nice it would be to have some shade where they could have a reprieve from the sun to eat lunch or take a quick nap. Bevans are problem solvers; so, they planted a tree. In a few years, sure enough, they had shade.
Ross remembered when he was very young going with his dad and riding on the back of the saddle of his dad’s horse. Yes, the saddle, not the backseat of a car. From the time he could put a bridle on a horse (4-5 years old), he was free to go anywhere he wanted; but he had two restrictions. First, he had to be home for meals at mealtime. If you missed the mealtime, you did not eat. Second, his work had to be done. On a farm the work is never done, but he still found time to do things he wanted to do.
On the 23rd of January 1946, he married his sweetheart, Donna Jean Metters. After their marriage he moved to Salt Lake City and went to work for Wonder Bread Company. He started working there when he was 21 years old, continued working for 41 years, and officially retired at 62 because of back surgery. While at Wonder Bread he became a member of their #1 Club. This award was only given to those who performed above and beyond. Each year he and Donna were treated to a wonderful trip. These included events like the Kentucky Derby and places such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, and many others.
He loved fishing and went as often as he could. Almost all Bevan family vacations included a fishing/camping adventure. He was an excellent fisherman! He was also a talented fix-it man. He was always willing to help others and could fix almost anything. Washing machines seemed to be a specialty, and Ross will be fondly remembered by many for his kindness and service.
Ross is survived by his loving wife Donna to whom he was married for 77 years, his children—Dee Ann (Richard) Ludwig, Craig (Renee) Bevan, Bruce (Kathy) Bevan, Keith (Sandy) Bevan, Sherri’s husband Martin Christensen, and Scott (Heidi) Bevan, 21 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Amos and Nellie Bevan, all 13 of his brothers and sisters, and his daughter Sherri Christensen.
