On March 22, 2024, longtime Sugarhouse resident Mary Lou Young, 81, passed away at Sunrise Senior Living in Holladay, UT. Mary Lou was born in Salt Lake City on May 16, 1942, to Mary Helm Murphy and Lester Leroy Young. She attended Highland High School before studying bookkeeping at LDS Business College. Mary Lou was head bookkeeper at Paramount Murray Laundry. She then worked for several decades in accounting at E-Systems (Raytheon/Moog).
Mary Lou pledged into the Beta Sigma Phi service and friendship sorority in October 1976 and served for 48 years. She was a long-time volunteer at St. Mark's Hospital and also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Kind-hearted and always upbeat, Mary Lou enjoyed sharing her crochet and knit crafts with friends and family. She was proud to have saved up to build her own home and she shared it with several rescued pets. She also enjoyed traveling, including a cruise to Alaska and trips to China and the Bahamas.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents and brother Max. She is survived by her brothers Joseph (Linda) Young and Blaine (Joyce) Young.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, March 30th at 1pm at Wasatch Lawn Memorial, 3401 S. Highland Drive, followed by interment at Elysian Burial Gardens. A Broken Circle Ceremony will precede the viewing at 12:45pm.
