Gayle was born to Reid and Gladys Huckvale Griffin on March 25, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated from East High School and later attended Brigham Young University majoring in Home Economics. She was a member of the Val Norn sorority and loved her experience and the friendships she cultivated there. Gayle often shared her favorite memories of summers working at Bryce Canyon and her many exciting adventures.
On September 18,1957, Gayle married Fredrick William Osterloh in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised their three boys, Rick, Craig & Mike in Olympus Cove. She was a huge support to her husband in his many business ventures, including their family restaurants, Fredricos Pizza, Fred’s Burger Chalets, El Sol, Fred’s Family Restaurants & Su Casa. Gayle’s greatest joys always involved her family. She enjoyed going on vacations but also loved staying home and making homemade pineapple ice cream. She and Fred would get together often with a group of lifelong friends they dubbed the Study Group. Although, it is still up for debate if it was mostly play and just a little studying.
Her faith and testimony in Jesus Christ was strong and she served in various callings in her church including Relief Society President. Her favorite, however, was being with the youth in the Young Women Organization. She was deeply loved by the girls and leaders and built many dear friendships through the years.
Gayle’s gift for gab was unmatched and she made friends everywhere she went. Her first question to anyone she would meet was always “Who are your parents & grandparents?” and she never failed to find some connection. She had the profound ability to make others feel loved, which was evident in all her relationships. She simply loved big - through providing for her kids, donating to charities, her sincere generosity to immediate and extended family, spending quality time with her grandchildren, and creating a carefree, loving home.
Gayle was involved in many social circles. She had a group of friends who played Bridge, tennis, and golf, friends she & Fred loved traveling the world with, and friends she made while spending extended time in Bear Lake, Kona, St. George and on many June trips to Capistrano. But her favorite place of all was being in her own backyard, mending trees, planting flowers, picking raspberries or sitting on the deck looking up at Mount Olympus.
In her later years, she lived where she could play golf and boy did she love to golf. She worked hard to be her best at everything she did. She would take lessons, practice daily, and of course she kept every scorecard.
An avid lover of all sports, you would often stop by to find her feet up on the couch with an ice cold can of Coke, watching golf, tennis, or BYU football and a crossword puzzle from the newspaper on her lap.
She is survived by her sons, Rick (Brenda) Osterloh, Craig (Kimiko) Osterloh, Daughter in law, Denice Osterloh, sister Sue Gaskill, 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Fred, son Mike, her Mother Gladys & Father Reid, brother Billy, and sister Judy.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise of Sandy and Inspiration Hospice for their loving care of our mom and grandma.
Graveside service will be held Monday, June 19th at 2:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 Highland Drive. A celebration of life will be held from 4pm - 7pm at Mike & Denice Osterloh’s Home 4022 Canyon View Pl., Sandy, UT 84092
