Lloyd passed away on October 13, 2023 at his home in Salt Lake City, surrounded by family. Lloyd was born in Joliet, Illinois to Howard C. Johnson and Gretchen A. Schuessler on October 2, 1932, the second oldest of four children in the family.
Lloyd married Paula J. Frederick on June 19, 1954, and they went on to have four boys. After serving in the Army, he graduated from Valparaiso University in Civil Engineering, and began his engineering career in Chicago shortly after. In 1973 the family moved to SLC where he helped open an office for Roberts and Schaffer. Lloyd worked his way up to Senior Executive Management and spent a few years at headquarters in Chicago.
Upon retiring, Lloyd hung up his suit and dedicated the rest of his days to his true passion; skiing Alta. He had a community of like-minded skiers, exploring all the runs inbounds and out of bounds near Alta. He had his favorite runs and routines, including getting first chair on Wildcat. One of his favorite runs off of Rocky Point is informally called ‘Lloyd’s Run’ by his friends. Having become something of a local legend, he eventually could not ski Alta without people yelling, “Hey, Lloyd”. He put this passion into words, and penned a book titled, “The Perfect Turn” all about his Alta experience. His last run at Alta was March 17, 2023.
In the off-season, he took up running and completed 10 full marathons and numerous other races, often finishing on the podium. He had pride in his yard, which is now full of wild flowers and water tolerant plants. He would help out his son, Lloyd D., on the farm in California and, with Paula, visited his traveling son, Sam, in various countries. Locally, he regularly attended church and hockey games with his son Russell and wife Janet, and their boys. He spent quality time with his grandchildren who all grew up getting in the car at 8:10am to get to Alta for first chair. Lloyds’ thirst for life was and is an inspiration for all. Lloyd, in every way, was an exceptional husband, dad and friend.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Paula, and three sons. The eldest Sam (Kathleen, deceased), and their children Morgan (Brian) and Philip (Corin), and great-granddaughter Margot. Lloyd D, his wife Sarah and their sons Ben (Corey) and William. Russell, his wife Janet and their sons Taylor and Alex. Lloyd and Paula’s youngest, David, passed away in 1993. David’s widow, Trish has remained a cherished part of the family.
A close family niche closing or inurnment will take place on October 27, 2023 followed by an open memorial service (10:30am) at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1955 E. Stratford Ave., SLC, Utah 84106 followed by a Celebration of Life and Lunch (Noon to 2pm) at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Dr., Millcreek, Utah 84106.
The family would prefer donations, in lieu of flowers, to his favorite ski area, where he worshipped, or a charity of your choice.
