1930 - 2010
Our devoted sister, aunt and friend, Joan, age 79 passed away on Sept. 7 of kidney failure. Born in Salt Lake Sept. 26, 1930, daughter of Eugene D. and Florence Amott. Joan graduated from East High School and the University of Utah, majoring in Elementary Education, a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. At Utah State University was awarded a master's degree in special education. Her career included teaching kindergarten through fifth grade in Salt Lake, supervising student teachers from BYU and teaching special education. Joan received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Salt Lake District of Education. She was an example to all colleagues for her outstanding teaching skills. She was firm, fair, and friendly with her students. Joan was a dedicated gardener and reader. Her spring, summer, and fall garden were a show place. She was an active member of the LDS Church, serving two service missions -- one for over forty years at the Brigham Young Home and another at the Church Office Building. She loved the out-of-doors, exploring new roads and seeing new sights. She traveled to Europe, Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska. Her favorite was the family cabin near West Yellowstone. She enjoyed the wild life, canoeing, and just relaxing. Joan had many friends dating back to kindergarten at Uintah Grade School where she formed a group of lifelong friends (The Bonneville Beauties) that still meet monthly. Other groups include Hawaiian Club, Classics Club, Friday Night Club, Opera Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Garden Club, Lion House Ladies, Birthday Club, and Book Club.
We will all miss Joan with her quiet and infectious personality. She has been a mentor to her all her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bob.
