Herb was born on May 25, 1939 to Richard & Elfriede Jung in Saarbruecken, West Germany. As a toddler, Herb’s mother was widowed and he experienced all the traumas of living in a bombed-out, war torn city.
Herb’s character would come to be defined by personal courage, a can-do attitude & loyalty to family. He never allowed his early experiences to become an excuse but used them as a propellant to leave Germany by himself at age 18. He believed that in all probability, he’d never see his family and friends again. He arrived in Utah sponsored by a BYU professor and speaking no English. In 1959, Herb married Irene Bothe. The U.S. Army drafted him in 1962 so, he & Irene became stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia, until 1964. Later that same year, their only child Annette was born in Utah.
Herb would spend the late 1960’s getting started on his American dream which came in the form of his company Superior Fiberglass. An industrial fiberglass business that did work for various airlines, the Salt Lake airport & assorted private companies. Herb always had “luck” on his side & he took advantage of every opportunity. His mind, specifically his ability with numbers, was like a calculator. There was not a math problem that Herb couldn’t solve in his head. He retired at the age of 58 to travel and play. Herb never did anything halfway, eventually traveling to & from Germany several times.
Herb was a natural born athlete who played on the local Alemannia soccer club during the 1960’s. He also enjoyed waterskiing & boating with family/friends. Herb joined the Cottonwood Country Club in the mid 1970’s and thus, began his obsession with tennis. His personal favorite experience was winning the Liberty Park “No Champs” tennis tournament in mixed doubles along with Irene. They were huge underdogs.
Herb’s tenacity combined with his friendly demeanor allowed him to overcome nearly insurmountable odds in living his American dream. “Lady luck” had a way of shining on Herb & he truly lived an amazing life.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 63 years Irene, his daughter Annette (Robert), his grandson Vincent (Leah), his great granddaughter Lina, several nieces & nephews, extended family & friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dieter Jung (Dionisia), brother Peter Schneider (JoAnne), sister-in-law Karen Schneider, in-laws Wilhelm & Lina Bothe, brother-in-law Wilford (Christel).
A private celebration of life will be held on Herb’s 84th birthday Thursday, May 25, 2023. Invitations to be sent shortly.
