Alvin Going Maughan was born in Weston, ID on November 12, 1932 to parents Alvin Thomas Maughan and Gertrude Evelyn Going Maughan. After suffering from a fall, he passed away peacefully a few short hours later on April 17, 2025 at the University of Utah Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Al graduated from West Side High School in Clifton, ID and attended BYU as well as Utah State University. He married his eternal companion Lorraine Schvaneveldt on June 12, 1953 in the Logan, UT Temple. After being married for only 6 short weeks, he was drafted into the US Army towards the end of the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany where he spent 18 months training scout dogs before being reunited with his young bride. He and Lorraine had a long and happy life together, and would have celebrated their 72nd anniversary this June. Al was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
Al was a master electrician and worked for Wasatch Electric for 29 years. After major back surgery in 1985, he spent the rest of his career as an electrician for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a hard worker and well respected by all of his colleagues.
Al enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hike. He summited all of the major peaks along the Wasatch Front, as well as several other peaks throughout the state. He even traveled to New Zealand for a one month hiking adventure, where he had the opportunity to meet his Going family relatives. Alvin was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an exemplary home teacher, and blessed many neighbors through his selfless service.
In general, he loved to work, especially on the family cabin in Lambs Canyon, his children’s projects, as well as his home and yard. Nothing made Al happier than being busy and helping others. Every year he planted a large garden, and loved sharing the amazing fruits and vegetables he grew. Al was an incredible neighbor, and cared for and served all in his community. He loved helping neighbors and friends with countless projects where he utilized his knowledge and skilled hands. He touched many lives and made lasting friendships through his service to all that knew him.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at the Garden Heights South Ward located at 2220 East Fisher Lane, Salt Lake City, UT 84109. A viewing will be held starting at 9:00 AM, with funeral services at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at the Weston Cemetery located at 300 North 100 West, Weston, ID.
