John Romig Smith, Esquire, a man who devoted his life to his family, faith, and to the preservation of the Constitution and the God given rights of all, regardless of their station in life. John was born May 15, 1930 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents John William and Edith Romig Smith, an infant brother, and Grandchildren Adam and Julie Smith. He is survived by his Wife of 34 years, Skeets Smith, 11 children John Michael, David, Richard, Greg, Brian, Suzanne, Tammi, Timothy, Danny, James, Stephanie, and 68 grand and great grandchildren. He was an Eagle Scout, graduated from Classen High School in 1948, was a CPO in the US Navy during the Korean War, graduated from OU in 1956, and OU Law School in 1959. He was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar July 21, 1959 and practiced Law in Oklahoma City. John was admitted to practice in the Western District of Oklahoma, Tenth Circuit, and Supreme Court of the United States. John vigorously defended the rights of others, regardless of their circumstance or the cost to himself. He also took great joy in mentoring young lawyers, whether Defense Attorneys or Prosecutors. He truly loved the Law and Defended the Constitution with his all. He never backed down from a legal challenge. He was a founding member and the first President of The Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, served as a prosecutor in the City of Valley Brook, and as a Reserve Deputy in Oklahoma and Lincoln Counties. He coached little league, led scouts, was active in his church, and loved to play golf. He was the oldest rookie ever at the State Fair Speedway at age 65. He surrounded himself with his family and could not resist sharing stories of their lives and accomplishments with anyone he met, they were who he was. He will be missed and remembered.
