She was preceded in death by her parents, Ret. Col. J. Lawrence Platz and Mary Platz, and her brother Robert Platz.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Craig) Fisher, and brothers, Michael Platz and Timothy Platz.
Born in Memphis, TN into a military family, Susan lived in many places as a child, including Germany and Japan. She lived in Williamsburg, VA for many years while raising her family and was President of the Williamsburg Chapter of the League of Women Voters in the 1970’s. Susan was very service-minded and volunteered for many charities, including the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Hawthorne Cancer Foundation, and Maymont Park.
She was also an avid animal lover, especially cats and birds. She would sit for hours watching the birds in her backyard and enjoyed educating visitors on the types of birds that could be seen at her feeders.
Her work career took several turns throughout her life. She started at Dow Badische (BASF) as a secretary in the 1960’s and retired as a Product Manager in New Jersey, over 30 years later. Her retirement didn’t last long before she began working for the American Lung Association chapter in Richmond. Susan also became a docent at Maymont Park and loved giving tours of the Dooley Mansion in her later years.
The family will receive friends from 2pm to 5pm on December 2nd at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Feed More (Feed More: Central Virginia's Core Hunger - Relief Organization) in Susan’s name.
