David was born in Carrollton, IL. and graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1972. His distinguished career in the Air Force spanned 30 years. He received his Ph.D. as a clinical psychologist in 1978. After several years as a staff psychologist, David became Chief of the Mental Health Clinic at Clark AB in the Philippines. Later, he became Senior Health Services Researcher for the Surgeon General of the Air
Force. He excelled at the executive level and was selected for two assignments as a Medical Group Commander at Peterson AFB in Colorado and Yokota AB, Japan. His career culminated as the Director, Medical Force Management and Chief of the Biomedical Sciences Corps. As Director, he collaborated with the Department of Defense and Air Staff in establishing staffing needs and was leader and mentor to over 2500 officers in 17 unique disciplines.
Even with his success in the Air Force, David continued to focus on that which was most important to him…his family and friends. He was a loving husband and father, and when his grandchildren were born, his love for them was unsurpassed. He was ever the doting “Papa” and would take every opportunity to spend time with all his grandchildren. He made time for friends and family and was always caring and almost generous to a fault. As Parkinson’s took its toll, he doubled his efforts to make the most of the time he had to spend with those he loved most.
While at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, David fell in love with the mountains and the great outdoors. He traveled the world, but his heart was always in Colorado and the beauty of the Rockies.
David was an avid reader, enjoying Sci-Fi and Fantasy. He loved a simple vodka martini, going for a jog, spending time outdoors and constantly telling his sons to invest for their retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Vivian Hindelang, his brother Michael, and his sister Holly Hindelang. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Tyann, his sons, David (Cheryl) and Curran (fiancee Melissa and her son Isaiah), 4 grandchildren, Riley, London, Grant, and Lachlan. Others who survive are his sister, Donna (Peter) and his brother, Tom (Theo) and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Jan. 29, 2022 at 11:00 at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel with a reception to follow. A Mass and burial will take place in the summer in his hometown of Carrollton, IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation or an organization for Parkinson’s research.
