Yep, I'm dead. I died on Friday, May 24th in Richmond VA. I had a little battle with cancer and cancer won. I was born on June 4, 1937, in Ronceverte WV to H. H. (Kirby) and Mildred (Milly) Boyd. Soon after we moved to a farm near Sinks Grove WV where I lived until going to college in 1955. I went to Union High School and then moved on to WVU.
After graduation from WVU, I took a job with the US Government for which I worked for over 35 years and really enjoyed it for at least 34 years.
During the years after college, and while in the army, I met and married Mary Ann (Robertson) on Dec. 21, 1963, and we remained married until my death. Folks, that's over 60 years! Our marriage was a huge success (remember I'm writing this). I became the adoptive father of Louise Catherine (Johnny White) and the father of Robert Matthew. In addition to our children, we had lots of pets – from dogs and cats to a lot of other animals.
Hobbies? Not much. During my working career, my job became my hobby. I enjoyed working and going to work every day. After retirement, I took up golf again and enjoyed it till I got too old. I got very involved with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees group and the American Legion Post 186 in Midlothian VA.
In addition to being in my obituary, I have asked my family to have the following played as they take me to be placed in the grave.
So long, it's been good to know ya
So long, it's been good to know ya
So long, it's been good to know ya
But a long time since I've been home
And I've gotta be driftin' along
I've sung this song, but I'll sing it again
Of the people I've met and the places I've been
Some of the troubles that bothered my mind
And a lot of good people that I've left behind, singing
So long, it's been good to know ya
So long, it's been good to know ya
So long, it's been good to know ya
But a long time since I've been home
And I've gotta be driftin' along
My family will have a viewing on Friday, June 7th at 10:00 am followed by a service at 11:00 am at Woody Funeral Home located at 1020 Huguenot Rd in Midlothian, VA. The burial service will be at 1:00 pm at the Virginia Veterans’ Cemetery in Amelia.
LOVE WEST VIRGINIA
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Richmond SPCA.
