He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Morrison Spiers, Sr. and Helen Figg Spiers, and his first wife, Sandra Tate Spiers.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Betty Jean Dawson Spiers; brother, William Robert Spiers (Betsy) of Metairie, LA; his daughter, Elizabeth Tate Spiers; son, Richard Morrison Spiers, III (Kimberly); step-sons, Matthew Kiczenski (Jake); Walter Dalton and Hugh Dalton; and his grandchildren, Jordan Spiers; Richard Morrison Spiers, IV; Madison Spiers and Jameson Connor Brooks.
Dick was a 1959 graduate of the University of Florida and had a long career in the insurance industry, retiring from both The Royal and Utica National Insurance Companies. Throughout the years, Dick also taught various insurance courses, including the CPCU insurance designation at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University and taught for the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia well into his 80’s.
He was a long time member of St. David’s Episcopal Church where in years past he loved singing in the choir.
He was known by all as a kind soul and faithful friend with a great sense of humor. When asked how he was would often respond “sitting upright and taking nourishment” and a favorite phrase was “you can’t unring that bell."
Dick had a strong work ethic and enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of insurance with others. He loved varied music from classical to Bluegrass, Dire Straits and Chicago and in years past playing golf with his friend Kim Ashcraft, however, his greatest joy was his family and he will live forever in their hearts.
