We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Margaret Joann Bowers on October 17, 2018. Known to her friends and family as Peggy, she passed peacefully Wednesday evening in Midlothian, Virginia, after bearing the heavy weight of Alzheimer’s for several years.
She was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on December 23, 1940 to Daniel and Mercedes (Buterbaugh) Williams. She is survived by her husband, Ed Bowers, her children, Lisa Bowers and Eric Bowers (wife, Stephanie and sons Wes and Guthrie). She is survived by her wonderful siblings, Dan Williams (wife, AJ), Jim Williams (wife, Anne) and Mary Robertson (husband, Brian, nieces Allina and Rianna). She also dearly loved her nephew, Bryan, and niece, Leigh, children of her beloved sister-in-law Betsy McIntosh.
Those who knew Peggy remember her as a caring, loving and steadfastly loyal friend, just as her family remembers her as a truly wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and wife of almost 57 years to Ed.
While Peggy was known for throwing a mean football at family football games, jogging countless miles and being a spirited Scrabble player, she is most known for caring: her mission was to spread kindness. She was a founding member of her church and helped found its Friends in Action team and Adventure Group. Peggy and Ed loved to host friends and family whether in their long-time home in Maryland or in Paris, where they lived for five years.
Peggy graduated from the University of Maryland with a Computer Science degree. Peggy loved the law and politics and later on earned her Paralegal Studies certificate, practicing at Aspen Systems and George Spangler Attorney. She was an avid photographer and this allowed her to capture and detail the friends and family who were her everything, and for whom she would drop everything to help.
Our family has been warmed by the kind words and condolences and we know she is in a better place.
A visitation and time for remembrance will be held Wednesday, October 24 from 4 to 8pm at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian. We welcome friends for light refreshments and will hold a brief prayer at 4:30.
The memorial service will be held at her home church, Mill Creek Parish in Rockville, Maryland, on November 11 at 3pm.
If desired, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
