Our condolences to all of Ly's family, and to his many friends. He was such a kind and positive person, and it felt good just to be in his presence. We knew him as a neighbor, an advisor on our lawn/garden, and (for John) as a VA Medical Center colleague.  To every role, he brought diligence and good humor. Ly's was one of the first relationships our family had when we moved to the neighborhood about 9-10 years ago. He was genuinely very kind and friendly with the adults and children in our family.  He was always generous when it came to offering plants, tips, and advice for our garden. It was always so good to see him and chat. I really feel his loss and suspect that will last for a long time.

Ly was an exceptional human being.  Over many years in our neighborhood it was a joy to see Ly in his truck, slowing to say hello in a way that was so genuine.  We can all learn from the way he moved through this world bringing light to all.

My husband and I were sorry to hear of Ly’s death. He was a cheerful presence for decades in Woodland Heights and we will miss seeing him in the neighborhood.

I cannot believe you are gone,  I so valued  your calm presence at the VA throughout the  years.  You could  navigate through a workload  in a style that was swift, steady & silent.  
You seemed to truly “live “ life,  balancing work with enjoying the moments, nature and people close to you. I remember sharing music and talking about all those Halloween decorations on Hanover Ave.

Ly was a truly beautiful soul. I met him soon after we moved into the neighborhood when he stopped by to look for a package intended for the person who sold us our house. As it seems happened often with Ly, we became fast friends. I deeply treasure the many serendipitous encounters and delightful conversations we’ve had over the years. Ly was such a great person. His quiet and easy going personality made it a pleasure to work with him. Although I did not know him very well on a casual personal basis...my favorite memory involving Ly is that when I first started at the Outpatient pharmacy at the VA Ly had just transferred to Inpatient section of pharmacy....just about everyone told me - "you're working in Ly's station", "that is where Ly Hia used to work" or "you took Ly's station". I got the feeling then that Ly was a special person...and he was. His kind, gentle spirit will be missed in our workplace.

would always bring me FRESH FRIES from café. I never really knew how he did it but when I worked eshift with him it was so enjoyable. When he met my grandson, it was such a joy to talk to him. He would sneak candy to him even when I would say NO! LOL. He was always so nice and helpful to me. I will miss him dearly.

I feel very fortunate to have had Ly as a neighbor for many years.  He helped me with my yard work and taught me many shortcuts that he had learned over the years.  And then of course our paths would always cross at many yard sales.  He was always helpful, cheerful and a joy to be around.  I will miss him very much.

You always brought joy to my day with your presence. I will remember the good times seeing you dancing to  music at night. We miss you lots!. Rest in peace.

I enjoyed our conversations. 
We had a lot in common.  He loved his family, He mentioned how much he enjoyed going to Myrtle Beach with them and  hunting for shark teeth. He loved gardening and giving tips.  We would see him at the Farmers market on his bike.
He was  a stranger to know one. 
We will truly miss him.


Ly Hia was a valuable and faithful employee serving our veterans at VAMC Richmond. He will be missed by all of us. He is was a kind gentleman who always had a smile on his face and never had a negative thought. Our world has lost the type of person we need most in these times. Condolences to his family.

Ly, so incredibly saddened to hear the news of your passing. I was just talking with you the other night. Cant believe its true. I enjoyed all of our inpatient evening shifts together, you were such a hard worker and so quick in the IV room. You were so kind and a joy to be around. I appreciated all the knowledge you passed on in regards to plants and flowers to me. I remember all of our talks about the marathon runners and how you enjoyed watching the races pass by your house. You will be truly missed by everyone especially the evening shift employees-from the pharmacy to the nurses on the floor who enjoyed seeing you as well. Rest in peace. 

It's unbelievable that you're no longer with us Ly. I have a lot of fond memories working the evening shift with you. Your kindness touched so many lives. You were so hardworking and caring; it's rare to find people like you in this world. May you rest in peace.
