Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, William R. McCoy and Alice Heffernan McCoy. She is survived by her loving husband Philip K. Sherman Jr, her devoted son, Justin Garrett (Mollie), her step-daughter Catherine Sherman (Steve), her four grandchildren Skylar Vera Wingard, Savannah Kate Wingard, Maddison Murphy Garrett, and Jayden McCoy Garrett, and three siblings William McCoy, Robert McCoy, and Alicia Dern (Dennis), as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Kathleen (Kathy) first moved to the area 40 years ago and began attending the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Midlothian. Kathy worked at Harrison-Bates in downtown Richmond and as a sales associate at JCPenney‘s. Kathy served as state delegate to the Republican Convention in both Virginia and Georgia. Kathy was involved in the Huguenot’s Republican Women’s Club and the Chesterfield County Republican Committee.
After retirement Kathy and her husband, Phil, moved to Powhatan where she continued her service as an active member of the Powhatan Republican Committee and the Powhatan Historical Society. Kathy enjoyed hosting events with Phil at their home in Powhatan and spending time with her friends and family, especially on beach trips to Amelia Island.
Those who knew Kathy remember her with great fondness, as someone who was kind, approachable, and easy to talk to. She will be remembered for her openness, honesty, and straightforwardness, which fostered genuine connections without pretense. Kathy was always upbeat, and always had something interesting to say. Her awareness of worldly affairs, as well as her dedication to her community and family, was inspiring. Kathy was a vibrant soul and eager to organize gatherings and engaged in various projects. She loved to bring people together and had a natural talent for making guests feel comfortable and entertained with effortless elegance. Kathy will be remembered with great love. She will be sorely missed.
