Harold Bruce Cooper 96, of Midlothian, died peacefully on November 3, 2017. Bruce was born in 1921 in Columbia, S.C., to William and Maggie Mae Cooper. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Ruth S. Cooper; and by all six of his siblings. Bruce is survived by his daughter, Karen Duni and her husband, John; and by his son, Bruce Cooper and his wife, Susan; six grandchildren, Angela Parker and her husband, Mike, John Duni and his wife, Katie, Michael Duni and his fiancee, Jasmine, Allison Perez and her husband, Kahle, Gretchen Cooper and Mark Cooper; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Abigail and Mae Parker and Cora, Hadley and Carter Perez. Bruce grew up in Asheville, N.C. and Atlanta, Ga. He was a proud WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant technician in a Railroad Battalion from 1942 to 1945. He served in North Africa, and the European and Pacific Theatres before returning to work for Southern Railway in Washington, D.C., where he worked for 35 years. Bruce and Ruth moved to Midlothian in 2011 and happily lived out their lives. He was the consummate Southern gentleman –a kind and gentle man and a friend to all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff at both Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center and Johnston Willis Hospital for their exceptional medical treatment and for their loving care. A celebration of our Dad (“Pop”) will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Sycamore Presbyterian Church, 510 Coalfield Road, Midlothian, Va. 23114. A gathering of family and friends will be held after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, Sycamore Presbyterian Church or Veterans Services Foundation, 101 N. 14th St., 17th Floor, Richmond, Va. 23219 (earmarked for SBVCC Activities Fund).
