Fate is a funny thing. Gary and i were friends for 40yrs. we would try and touch base every now and the . but life and family makes people drift apart . i tried calling him a few time . and got a computer tone . which i thought odd because we all know .computers held no interest for Gary.well today thru an odd set of circumstances. i come to find out that Gary had passed away almost 1 yr ago to the day.im devastated !! and so sorry . he was a gentle soul that wouldnt harm a fly .Doreen , Leif .Karen . if you read this. please accept our  belated condolences . im so sorry for your loss . ... i lost an old friend today....

I woke early this morning and find myself reminiscing good times with my old faithful friend, Gary.  He was a man of conviction and passion for life, family, and friends.

   Just now learned of Gary's passing.  I am so sorry for your loss.  I know it has been a long time since we have seen each other, but I still have wonderful memories of you and your parents. my deepest sympathies to the Dahl Family. I met Gary at Ferrum College. He was a very cool person. He was always full of life,always positive and just had one of those attractive personalities. If you met him or was introduced to him 10 times out of 10, you became his friend. I just heard of Garys passing on 7-21 but , I was just thinking of him about 4-5 weeks ago(he just crossed my mind) and I could see that face and his infectious smile he always had. My heart has been heavy since I learned that Gary had passed. So many memories flood my mind of the experiences we have shared. I met Gary through Scott probably in 1986. I saw him every day while living at the Peacock house. There were a lot of good times hanging out with the many friends who gathered there for music, cookouts and lots of laughter. There were  many concerts to go to in those days and Gary was one of my only friends who liked traditional country music. I'll never forget when we saw Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and George Jones at the Richmond Coliseum. Gary also introduced me some great music. He had a huge collection of records, and I always thought he had a good voice for the radio. He loved music and defiantly helped expand his audiences and friends range of what they might otherwise not hear.  I admired Gary's outgoing, fun loving personality, and the way he brought people together. Gary had so many diverse friends, and I know he has connected many new friendships together. He really knew how to throw a party and was a most hospitable host at his large, memorable gatherings. Through the years I have always looked for him at concerts and we would catch up on life. He and I were the same age, and we both did landscape work on the side. We shared a love for the outdoors and country living, and we would talk about anything from heirloom turkey breeds to politics. It was an easy friendship. I am keeping Gary's family and many friends in my prayers as we all go on with out him. He was a standout individual who defiantly enriched my life. Gary, see you on the other side of this life my friend!

I was shocked to hear of Gary's passing.  He called me every Saturday at WCVE and always had something encouraging to say.  When I found out he worked at the station out near Amelia that had live bluegrass broadcasts, I was very impressed.  That's REAL radio and people like Gary kept it alive. We had big plans to go to some shows together this summer. That'll never happen no mo' no mo'.  RIP Gary!

   My sincere sympathies for your loss. Although I never met Gary, I purchased literally hundreds of records from him online over the past five years. His humor and love of life were apparent in our email exchanges. Each time I play one of his records, I will remember how much our long-distance association boosted my spirits  -- the spirits of an old, sick man who deeply loves bluegrass and traditional country music. I was so very, very, sad to hear of the passing of your brother Gary. I know how close he was to you and your children, and the lost must feel staggering. I did not have the chance to meet him, but from reading the entries of others I can tell what a wonderful person he was. May God sustain you and your family through the coming days.

Gary will be remembered for saving an historic site - the best-preserved flash lock known in the United States, built for cargo boats called batteaux, which carried tobacco hogsheads down the Willis's River almost two centuries ago. I was honored to be there at his July Jam when he dedicated the site on July 21, 2007. Thank you, Gary!

Like I'm sure he did with everyone who met him, Gary found a way to become my friend through his subtle, caring and genuine ways.  His love of music was contagious and everything he did was done with enthusiasm. I wont hold another bluegrass album (and I'll pick up many) without remembering Gary. I never met Gary in person, but bought many Country and Bluegrass records from him online. He was a great guy to talk to and really cared a lot for the music. My prayers and condolences go out to all.

We will always remember Gary's pleasant and friendly manner and smiling face.  We are all so saddened by this loss.

Gary was a truly lovely man, he took my late husband down the James River in his canoe, a event he never forgot and laughed about for years, also thankyou Gary for letting me feed your goats! the get togethers at your place all such fun when we visited from the UK. Rest in peace Gary.

Gary, was a Great Friend of mind, I met Gary at WXGI in Richmond, VA. 1995, we were Brothers in Music! When Gary started working at WSVS he would call me often to come up to the Station & play live, I gave Gary a Train Whistle to blow while I was playing the Guitar, We had a Great Time together, Gary, & my wife Cheri went to Marion, Va. To see Tom T. Hall, We met Tom T. Hall walking down the sidewalk & we got some pictures together, I will always remember that. He was a Great Guy & I will surley miss him!!  He's with the Angel Band now!! I pray the Holy Comforter will give the Dahl Family Solace & Peace! For in God we are Secure!

Gary was and has been a brother to me since my Ferrum Days.  There are so many of my memories that include Gary that I will keep him in my heart always.  Gary was always there and ready for a good time and we have had many great times together on tour to shows, Jamming on the Willis River and floating down the Pigg River.  It has been my honor to have known Gary and I will treasure him and his family for the rest of my life.
