PERKINS, Dorothy O’Brien, 93, of Bon Air, died April 6, 2014. She was born to the late William Walker and Mary Nowlin O’Brien on September 14, 1920, in Appomattox County, the eighth of nine children. After graduating from Appomattox High School, Dorothy moved to Richmond and completed her education at Smithdeal Massey Business School, first working for the Commonwealth of Virginia State Registration Board for Contractors and later for the Senate of Virginia. But her favorite job was being a wife, mother and homemaker. Dorothy’s passion was working outdoors and her love of gardening resulted in a yard full of beautiful flowers and a large vegetable garden, the bounties of which she generously shared with others. She was a loving, kind, caring and giving person, loyal to her family and friends, and always willing to help those in need. Dorothy was strong in her faith and was an active member of Bon Air United Methodist Church for over 60 years serving in many capacities. She and her late husband, also were volunteers with several local charities and enjoyed presenting musical programs at local nursing homes. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Clarence W. Perkins; her parents; and eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Mary P. Clay (Neal); son, Claude H. Perkins (Brenda) all of Richmond; granddaughter, Christine Engel (Nick) of Vancouver, B.C.; eight nieces and nephews; and step grandchildren, Trey Clay and Lori Lawson (Dennis). Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Bon Air United Methodist Church.
