Obituary of Rev. Charles Walter Gibson
GIBSON, Rev. Charles Walter, age 85, passed away on January 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rocky Gibson and Virginia Boynton; stepfather, Roy Boynton; and brother, John E Gibson. Charles is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Michael (Charles), Stephen (Kathy) and Dwayne (Jeanette) Gibson; grandsons, Kevin (Elizabeth), Joshua (Taryn), Justin and Tyler; and five great-grandchildren, Camdyn, Holden, Tenley, Avery and Kylan. Charles graduated from John Marshall High School, class of 1948. He was in the Corps of Cadets, "F" Company, with the rank of Regimental Captain Quartermaster. At the University of Richmond, he was a member of Alpha Delta fraternity. Charles began his ministry at Graceland Baptist Church, Powhatan, Va., at age 20, while a student at the U of R and continued in ministry for 65 years. Charles loved the ministry, his greatest joy was preaching from the pulpit. Churches he served, all Baptist, included Cosby Memorial, Emmanuel (Manassas), Lyndale, Oak Grove, Wilroy (Suffolk), Amelia and Woodbine (Manassas). Charles' ministry included 10 international mission trips. On three occasions, he served among the San Blas Indians (Panama). Six times Charles led mission teams to Guatemala. In 1984, he served in India with a team in Partnership Evangelism. After assisting and organizing the chaplaincy program at Chippenham Hospital, in 1972 Charles served there as a volunteer chaplain. He served later as a volunteer chaplain at Obici Memorial Hospital (Suffolk) and Prince William Hospital (Manassas). After retiring, Charles served as an Intentional Interim Pastor in 15 churches throughout Virginia. He served as secretary for the IIM network of Virginia and later served as their president. For recreation he enjoyed camping with family and friends. Boating and teaching young people to water ski gave Charles great satisfaction. Charles' greatest relaxation was riding his motorcycle. In his spare time he built furniture as a hobby. The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Richmond, with visitation Wednesday, January 13, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be at Huguenot Road Baptist Church, Richmond, on Thursday, at 1 p.m. Burial in Goochland Baptist Church Cemetery, 2454 Manakin Rd., Manakin-Sabot, Va.
