Carrie L. Butts, born on March 2, 1944, was the third of six children of the late Rev. Elmer C. and Hester Wright. Carrie peacefully succumbed to Alzheimer’s on May 23, 2023. Carrie attended elementary school in Greensville County, Virginia, middle school at Mary J. Donohue in Bayonne, New Jersey, and back to graduate from E. W. Wyatt High in Greensville County. After high school, after Carrie married and moved to Richmond, Virginia. From that union, Lester Dale Butts was born.
Carrie attended cosmetology school and bible college at Faith Landmark Ministries. She retired from Philip Morris and celebrated her retirement by traveling with her favorite sister/cousin, Frances Wright.
Carrie accepted the Lord at an early age at Antioch Baptist Church in Skippers, Virginia. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, she joined Trinity Baptist Church and later Richmond Christian Center. She was a member of the choir at each church. Carrie was a devout Christian and later found her home at Faith Landmark Ministries where she flourished and became engrossed in studying, learning and spreading God’s word.
Carrie was preceded in death by four of her siblings, Ernestine S. Hall, Elmer C. Wright Jr., Leon D. Wright and Avis M. Royal. Carrie is survived by her son Lester D. Butts, one sister, Katrina Wright Bagley, several nieces: Avis Annette Royal, Carol McClure ,Lynnette Royal, Tanja Hall, Delfreida Waithe , DaVonne Garner, Jana Lee, Nephews: Hilbert Royal, Juan Royal, Gordon Wright, Barry Wright, Leon Wright, Nathaniel Jay Govan, Lamont Wright, and Lemuel Wright. She also leaves to mourn her chosen niece and nephews that she held dear to her heart – Nakea Govan, Damion Royal and Perry Hall, Jr., – her best friends Frances Wright, Essie Cousins and Betty Melton and a host of great nieces, great nephews and loving relatives and friends.
Carrie is fondly remembered by her love of laughter, music, cooking, reading, and teaching the Word. She was an avid shopper, traveler and enjoyed watching HSN,Law and Order, Judge Judy, and Family Feud.
