JEWELL, Beverly Williams (Stone), of Richmond, beloved mother and grandmother, died suddenly May 23, 2016. The daughter of Jasper and Kathleen Williams, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bayard E. Jewell; one brother, C. Earle Williams; two sisters, Mildred W. Hyde and Inez W. Carter; her son-in-law, Robert L. Powell Jr.; her grandson, Daniel V. Stone; and nephews, Tristram T. Hyde IV and James T. Hyde. She is survived by three children, Kathleen P. Minnick (Emory), Deborrah S. Tolson (Raymond) and H. Coleman Stone Jr. (Mary Kay); eight grandchildren, R. Brandon Powell (Kimberly), B. Randolph Powell (Juliana), Brian C. Stone, Katherine S. Stells (David), Grant Tolson, Hallie M. Satterwhite (Mike), John Tolson (Wendy) and Amanda T. Valenzuela (Victor); four great-grandchildren, R. Elijah Powell, Soren U. Powell, Lukas D. Stells and Marin Satterwhite; and special friend, Bob Lowry.
Beverly "Bev" was a professional big band singer. She began her singing career at around age 12 with her brother's band. She was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Va. She was a founding member of Stratford Hills United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and a soprano soloist. She was also a charter member of Willow Oaks Country Club. After graduating from high school, Beverly traveled around the east coast singing with several bands, including the Herb Stone Band. She married Herb Stone in 1947 and settled in Richmond, where she continued singing with many bands around the city, including The Continentals.
In 1949, she began what she considered her most important job, that of mother and then later grandmother. She continued her singing career and loved to entertain anytime there was music around. She was always the life of the party and no one who met her ever forgot her. She also had a career in sales, working for companies including Virginia Impression Products, Adams Marketing and North American Van Lines.
Her remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2016. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2016, at Bon Air United Methodist Church, 1645 Buford Road. A reception will follow. Online condolences to WoodyFuneralHome.com.
