Berley Roberts Jr. was born on July 11, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Fannie and Berley Roberts Sr.
Berley was baptized at the early age of twelve at the First Baptist Church, in Cherry Hill, under the leadership of the late Reverend John C. Clarke. Berley worked throughout his childhood cutting grass and washing cars. In June of 1968, Berley graduated from Forest Park High School.
On August 28, 1968, after graduating from high school, Berley entered the military and joined the United States Air Force. While serving in the Air Force, Berley received numerous awards and citations. Berley also received his Bachelor’s degree from the military academy. Recognition and accomplishments while in the armed forces include Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Air Force Recognition Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon for both Short and Long Tours, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer Award, Professional Military Education Graduate Certificate, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Graduate of Senior Non Commissioned Officer School Certificate, and Graduate First Sergeant School Certificate.
Berley traveled the world while serving in the Air Force, including being stationed in Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Texas, New Jersey, Wyoming, North Carolina, Georgia and California. While serving in the Air Force, he took every opportunity to be with his family allowing his parents and siblings the opportunity to travel abroad to Germany, Paris, and Wyoming. When Berley was stationed nearby in North Carolina and Georgia, he always took time to visit and stay in touch with his family. Berley retired from the United States Air Force on September 1, 1992, while living in Wyoming. Shortly after retirement he worked as a manager at Trillegeant. He later moved to Virginia and worked 10 years at the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office as a 911 Communication Officer. Berley retired from the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office in 2011.
Berley enjoyed family gatherings with his mom playing the piano and singing the family favorite hymns, cooking on the grill, and just sitting in the presence of his family. Berley never missed sending his mom and sisters bouquets of flowers, chocolates, and gifts every year for their birthdays. He leaves to cherish his memories his sisters, Barbara McGee, Shelia Lewis (Marvin), Diann Cupid (Cecil), a lifetime and devoted friend Joseph Van Tuel, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
