Susan Fleming Masten walked into the open arms of her heavenly father on July 15, 2024. Susie was born February 22nd, 1953 in New Rochelle, New York to Martha and Robert Gleason. She was raised in Midland, where she attended Midland High School, graduating in 1971. She attended Duke University for her freshman year of college before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin to cheer on her beloved Longhorns. She graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1975.
Susie was an adoring and devoted mother and grandmother, a wonderful and sought after friend, a loving and supportive sister and had a successful and accomplished career in finance. Susie was well known and loved for her contagious enthusiasm and uncanny ability to find the positive in all circumstances. Her laugh and unique expressions (Bee-isms) brought joy to all that were blessed enough to be around her. Susie took exceptional joy in everyday life, but her happiest times and her God-given gifts were most evident in her being “Bee” to her two wonderful grandsons, both of which she had an exceptionally close and unique relationship with.
Susie had a genuine interest in everyone she met, and she never met a stranger. She befriended literally anyone and everyone - she had best friends of all ages, stages and walks of life. Susie was intelligent and sharp - she ever meet a puzzle she couldn’t master, a math problem she couldn’t answer, or a word game she couldn’t solve, much to the chagrin of those on the other end of the game. Outside of her precious and adoring family, Susie took great joy in her community in Midland, especially her colleagues at MTCU where she enjoyed a wonderful career she found for herself after her children had launched into the world.
She delighted in gardening, nature, wildlife, every holiday and Birthday (no one loves Christmas more than Bee!), sports (especially the Cowboys and Longhorns), and the “simple things in life.” She also delighted in what those around her loved and would champion and cheer her family and friends on in all they did. She was thoughtful beyond measure, always anticipating every potential need, emotion or concern for those she loved. She was a tireless rescuer of animals; she “fostered” (they always became permanent residents) countless cats and bales of turtles over the years.
Preceded in death by her parents, Martha Wallingford Gleason and Robert Ellis Gleason and her brother, Thomas Gleason. She is survived and will be immeasurably missed by her brother, Michael Gleason; her son, Nick; her daughter Jenny and her husband, Dan Harris; and her two treasured grandsons, James and Scotty Harris.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Susie’s life at First Presbyterian Church in Midland at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, July 25th. Please wear colors of your choosing to celebrate a tremendously bright spirit that is our loss, but Heaven’s gain.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests memorial donations be made to the ASPCA (www.aspca.org) in her name.
