Shirley was born in Hamshire, Texas on February 21, 1929, to Florence Oliver Phelps and Brooxy Bryant Phelps. She graduated from Beaumont High School and attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Shirley was married to James (Jim) L. Jones, Jr. on August 11, 1949; they were married 40 years.
Shirley and Jim moved to Midland, Texas in 1950, where both worked for Magnolia (Mobil) Oil. She continued to work in the oil industry as production clerk/bookkeeper/one-woman office until the age of 78. In 2008, Shirley moved to Rockwall, Texas and lived with her daughter and son-in-law.
Shirley was a longtime member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Midland, Texas. She was active in the United Methodist Women’s Circle and served on numerous church committees and boards. She was also a member of the Desk & Derrick Club, Professional Secretaries, Toastmasters, took continuing education classes at Midland College. Shirley loved traveling and her destinations included the Holy Land, England, Mexico, Caribbean Islands, California, Washington DC, Las Vegas, New Hampshire, and Maryland. She began ballroom dancing at her 60’s and loved every step.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, James L. Jones, Jr, her sister, Juanita Evelyn Phelps Gilkerson, and her brothers, Everett B. Phelps and Charles Wayne Phelps.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Jamie Jones Rubush and her husband, Edward (Jerry) Rubush of Rockwall, Texas; son Alan L. Jones and his wife, Ann Marie Warren Jones of Dallas, Texas; two granddaughters, three step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Friday, December 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church with Gilbert Bela officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Marks United Methodist Church, 1701 N. Main Street, Midland, Texas 79701.
