She was born September 3, 1926, in Abilene, Texas and was adopted by O.O. and Eva Dever as a newborn and raised in Snyder, Texas, until graduating from Snyder High School. Marcia then lived in Long Beach, CA. while working at the Boeing Bomber Plant during WWII, then Lubbock, TX. while attending Texas Technological College for a short time, and then off to Dallas, TX., where she met and married John Howell Chandler in 1948. They moved to Midland in the spring of 1953, and Mom grudgingly learned to adjust to the pervasive sand storms that roved the area during the early to mid-1950’s drought. Ever the warrior, she settled into Midland on her own terms and became involved in many social circles that were starting to develop during that time period. She worked as a bookkeeper for several Independent Oil Operators during the 50’s and 60’s, and was manager of the Elks Club for a brief time. Mom’s true passion was buying and renovating homes, living in them for a short period, then off to a new project that required her attention. Mom used to tell me with pride that Dad didn’t know how to hammer a nail until he married her. Dad always had other comments. She finally found her dream job when she became a realtor in her 60’s. Surviving a heart attack, a broken hip, a broken leg, osteoporosis, Mom refused to give up her independent ways…and car keys. She fell ill after finishing weed eating her yard in October and did not recover. What else can you say about an 89 year old “redheaded” dynamo and a member of the greatest generation that ever walked this planet?
She is survived by her son, Stephen L. Chandler (Lucy), grandsons, Cory C. Chandler (Summer), Andrew C. Chandler (Rachel), step grandsons, Tony Chandler (Melissa), and Louis Chandler, and 10 great grandchildren.
Mom, may you find your next project in eternity with hammer in one hand and paintbrush in the other.
I wish to thank the staff at Midland Memorial Hospital, the Continued Care Hospital, Senior Care facility, and Home Hospice, for their valiant efforts to bring Mom back, then to make her end a peaceful one without pain.
A graveside service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make a make a donation to your favorite animal shelter in Mom’s name.
