Lorena was born August 16, 1918, to John C. and Ada Hicks Dunagan in Gaines County, Texas on her parents’ ranch. The family moved to Midland in 1925. Lorena graduated from Midland High School and attended Hardin-Simmons University and The University of Texas in Austin where she studied fashion design. She married A. A. (Poosty) Jones in Midland on June 7, 1940. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church since the late 1920s, a former longtime member of Ranchland Hills Country Club, Progressive Study Club, a bridge club, and En Ami Book Club. She volunteered for many years as a Pink Lady in the Midland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary which she often said was her most gratifying activity outside of her family.
Lorena and Poosty enjoyed traveling, especially to golf tournaments which took them to many states, including Hawaii, and to Scotland and Morocco. Poosty was the golfer and Lorena enjoyed the people they met and the scenery. She had a great appreciation of beauty, in nature and in the arts, and was an enthusiastic supporter of Midland’s performing and visual arts programs. She was very proud of the outstanding city her hometown has become.
Family came first for Lorena. She was never happier than when surrounded by loved ones, and she leaves not only her children and grandchildren, but many nieces, nephews, and cousins who consider “Eenie” their favorite.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Poosty, in 2009; two brothers, Conrad Dunagan and wife, Kathlyn (Kitty), Robert (Buddy) Dunagan and wife, Bobbie; a sister, Helen Reeves and husband, Bud; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Hardy. Also preceding Lorena in death were brothers-in-law, D. Lee Jones and wife, Georgia; J. Ramon Jones and wife, Lois; and sister-in-law, Lillian Thomas and husband, Pete.
Lorena is survived by her three children, Joe Lee Jones, Carolyn Sutton, both of Midland, and Gus Jones and wife, Chloe of Kingsland, Texas; step-son, Reverend Jack Monte Jones and wife, Virginia of San Angelo; grandchildren: Joel David Sutton, Katherine Christine (K. C.) Jones, Steven Chance Jones, and Hillary Robertson; along with step-grandchildren, John Robinson Jones, Julie Jones, Claire Pursley and husband, Jeff, and Porter Taylor. Her great-grandchildren are Robert Joel Sutton and wife, Leah, David and Mary Sutton, Rucker Pursley and Porter Alan Taylor; also two great-great-granddaughters, Grace Lorene and Robin Elizabeth Sutton. She is also survived by one sister, Virginia Hardy of Abilene.
The family wishes to express appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff at Senior Care Center during the last year.
Family will welcome friends at Ellis Funeral Home on Thursday, March 29 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A committal service will be held on Friday, March 30 at Resthaven Memorial Park at 11:30am with the memorial service held later at 1:30pm at First Baptist Church of Midland.
