Our beloved husband and father, Larry Verlan Bohannon passed away June 11, 2015, at the age of 71. Larry was born on January 10, 1944 in Houston, Texas to Amos and Hettie Mae Bohannon. The family then moved to Midland, Texas in 1951. Larry attended various schools, developing strong ties and life long friends, until the age of 15, when he quit school to start a lifetime of achieving success. Following in his father and brothers ambitions, he entered the oilfield as a worm at the age of 17 and stayed in the industry until his death.
Larry and Grace wed on November 13, 1962 and fostered a joint love and passion of cars and dogs. Together, with their five children, they travelled the United States, Pakistan and Guatemala while working in the oilfields before setting permanent roots in Midland in 1981. Larry showed talent and ambition in the oilfield, working for various companies and was instrumental in the startup of other companies, including Lakota Drilling, before starting Adobe Oilfield Services in 1998. He grew his company from a few employees renting downhole tools and selling bits, to more than 400 employees, working on rigs, trucks, pulling units and other oilfield services. His progressive way of thinking, such as naming his rigs western names like Rawhide instead of numbers, set him apart from other drilling companies. Even catching the attention of a reality show. Larry, when asked how many employees he had working for him would often say, “Oh about half”. While making a formidable competitor in the oilfields, Larry and Grace still had time for their many hobbies and pastimes such as car shows, fishing, and enjoyed various projects at his ranch and lake place, building, fencing, and clearing land. Larry always had loyal and loving dogs, and spent hours working in his yard and gardens.
Larry’s achievements, accolades, hobbies, passions and pastimes are too numerous to list as is his number of colleagues and friends. Larry is survived by wife of almost 53 years, Grace, sons Ray Bohannon and wife Rosale, Billy Bohannon and wife Angie, daughters Brenda Bohannon, Lisa Rose and husband Rob, and Rhonda Fulton and husband Donnie. His grandchildren are Keiva Garcia and husband Nathan, Corry Norwood, Whitney Young, Rhett and Caleb Rose, Stephen and Emily Fulton, Dylan, Ethan, Alex and Olive Bohannon, and great grandchildren Kori and Christian Cooper, Jacob, Fella, and Emily Garcia, and his beloved fur baby Dixie who was by his side until the end and is grieving with the rest of the family.
Also mourning the loss of this “larger than life” man includes many other relatives, friends, and family by choice. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Hettie Mae Bohannon, brothers Richard Bohannon, and infant Carl Bohannon.
