Son Bill Weldon, Jr. and wife Debby of Earth TX, daughter-in-law Jane Weldon of Midland TX, brother Charles Cooper and wife Bernice of Lake Livingston, TX; sister-in-law Sandra Dooley of Dallas, TX; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, along with all of her family, will miss her gentleness and love until we join her at the feast at the Father’s table.
Janice Rose Cooper was born January 30, 1930 in Taylor County in Abilene TX to Charlie Cooper and Rebecca Sedberry. When she was a young girl her mother married John Emmitt Maxwell. Jan told stories of walking across town to attend Abilene Christian High School, working as a soda jerk at a local shoppe, being a ticket taker and a bellhop at the Paramount theatre and how she used to drink Dr Pepper on the steps of the Admin building of ACC. She was a southpaw or lefty, and was nicknamed “Salty” for putting salt on her apples at school. She married her sweetheart Billy Charles Weldon on December 26, 1947 and the two lovebirds, as they were often called, shared 55 years together. She had two sons, one in Pensacola FL, and one in Abilene, TX before the family moved to Midland in 1955.
Jan took a job at San Jacinto Jr High in 1960 as the bookkeeper, before moving up to Robert E Lee High School in 1963, where she remained for 32 years. Students would talk of going up to her window to get a quarter when the vending machine didn’t work right, or the help she gave them if they lost a school book. She was always good with numbers, and saved just about everything neatly filed and organized. Upon retiring, she took some art classes learning drawing, painting and pottery, as well as getting very involved in the genealogy and ancestry of our family. She and Bill would often go for drives around town just to check on family and friends, sometimes just to give you some “walking around money.”
Jan was a charter member of Golf Course Road Church of Christ; spending years involved in a variety of women’s bible studies, including the Tuesday Morning Ladies Bible Class. She was very dedicated to studying scripture, and a living example of the fruit of the Spirit, known especially for her patience, and kindness and love. Her wisdom and advice was always gentle and true. Family would tease her about being the last one out of the church building because she was always talking with someone. Her generosity and willingness to help, along with her sweetness and heartfelt empathy are greatly missed. She loved Jesus, and it showed.
She was known as Jan, Mother, Grandmommy, and Mema and she will forever be in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. We can’t wait to see you again, Jan, to share stories and laughter, food and fellowship, and to sit together at the feet of Jesus.
