James was born in Roby, Texas on September 4, 1931. He attended Seminole High School where he met his wife of 59 years, Laverna Wauson. James and Laverna were married on July 8, 1950.
James worked as a carpenter and painter until he retired at 80 years of age. He loved spending time with his family. Studying the Bible and sharing its message with others was very important to him. He enjoyed working as a volunteer with the kindergarten classes at Jane Long Elementary, affectionately known as Papa James.
James is preceded in death by his spouse, Laverna, James (Bo) Simmons, Jr., son, Frances Daniels, sister, Oran J. Simmons, brother, Betty Shelley, sister, and Dan Simmons, brother.
James is survived by his daughter, Linda Odom of Midland; sons, Mark Simmons of Midland, Charles Simmons and wife, Cyndi, of Stamford; daughter, Rita Scott and husband, Darryl Scott, of Ft. Stockton; sons, Bill Simmons and wife, Peggy, of Midland, and John Simmons and wife, Serina, of Girvin, 28 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Clara Hammit of Midland, Georgia Shipman of Lubbock, and Vera Covington of Midland, and brother, William Simmons of Lubbock, and a host of nephews and nieces.
James will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12th at Ellis Funeral Home. The graveside service will be held at 3pm on April 13th at Resthaven Memorial Park with Darryl Scott officiating.
