He loved and was loved by those who survived him, including his daughter, Rachel Welch and husband Taylor of Midland; son, Branden and wife Ashley of Dallas; sister Jennifer Adams and brother-in-law Clint of Big Spring, sister-in-law, Karen A' Rowan and brother-in-law, Jan Pritzl of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Haley and Macy Welch and Benjamin, Thomas and Addison Helms as well as Wyatt Cannon, numerous other family members and thousands of people and their dogs.
Mike's biggest impact was, is, and will continue to be in the lives of the dogs of the world, much like his wife, Charlee, who preceded him in death nearly eight years prior. Mike was an avid breeder, shower, and instructor. He was widely known near and far as a dog fancier almost from birth, primarily with Basset Hounds, but many other breeds along the way. While he won many awards in the several decades in the sport, the most well-known was at Westminster, the most prestigious dog show in the country. He was sought out for his knowledge in showing dogs, particularly those starting their dog show journeys. He wanted friends and family to celebrate the memories he developed along the way.
A memorial celebration will be at Ellis Funeral Home on May 18 from 11 am to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Basset Hound Club of America Health Foundation via www.bassethoundfoundation.org/support.html.
