Gene (Shorty) Carlton, 76, passed away February 12, 2013 suddenly while at work doing what he loved. He was a self-employed tile/ marble contractor for 54 years in Midland. He not only loved his work but took pride in the quality of his workmanship. He was a perfectionist who left his mark with beautiful work in several buildings such as the Claydesta Building along with other buildings in the Claydesta Complex, the Summit Building, among others throughout Midland and Odessa. He also tiled countless homes in the Permian Basin. He was born on April 15, 1936 in Snyder, Texas to Minnie Brown of Weatherford who preceded him in death. He was an active member of First Assembly of God Church in Midland.
He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, Michael Vann Carlton in 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Carlton of Midland, a son, Mark Wayne Carlton and a daughter, Valorie Huston both of Midland, A step-daughter, Tandy Arp of Odessa and step-sons, Tony Fillman of Odessa and Tommy Fillman of Springfield Missouri; two brothers, Kenneth Carlton and wife Elizabeth of Austin and John Brown and wife Vickie of Weatherford along with numerous grandchildren.
Family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home between the hours of 6:00-8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm, Friday February 15, 2013 at First Assembly of God Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Online condolences may be offered at www.ellisfunerals.com.
