Donald Lee McClurg

Don ( ‘Clurg) was born in Odessa, TX on November 25, 1938 to Hershel Woodrow McClurg and Bonnie Weaver McClurg. He is survived by his wife JoAnne Markle (Sparkle) McClurg of Midland, his daughter, Lee Anne McClurg of Lewisville, TX and his son, Hunter William (Bill) McClurg of Fort Worth,TX his brother Tooter McClurg and wife Patty of Snyder, TX and nephew Carl McClurg of Slidell, LA.

Don attended Texas Western University in El Paso with a BS degree in Geology. He was a proud member of the APO fraternity. He met the love of his life, JoAnne in 1959. They eloped in 1960 in Socorro NM. He worked in Utah at a Uranium Mill and then for the highway department in El Paso. He joined the NAVY in 1962 and went to Newport Rhode Island for Officer Candidate School. He was stationed in Pittsburg, CA on the USS Pyro and then San Diego, LST Summit County. After serving his country proudly, he was able to put that geology degree to use. He worked for for Pan American\Amoco in Midland. He was transferred to Fort Worth for work and lived in Justin. Back then he was the sole car on I35 S for his commute to Fort Worth. Eventually, the family moved back to Midland where he worked for Great Western, then eventually he worked as an independent geologist for Darrell Smith at Desana. Later he partnered with Tom Cook which became McClurg and Cook. He loved to bass fish and took many fishing trips to Mexico, survived a plan crash and also taught his kids to hunt. He enjoyed attending Comstock Baptist Church.

He was a life of the party, very loyal and true and believed in honesty and handshake meant something. He and JoAnne loved their Apostrophe ‘C ranch in Val Verde County as well as their home in Box Canyon on Lake Amistad. Sunsets were something special to all. He was always tinkering and could fix anything. Dad knew it all. His shop was immaculate and if you used his tools and didn’t put it back right, he’d tell you about it. It was always 5 o’clock somewhere, especially at the deck at the lake. He loved that place. He loved his dogs Winnie, Sammie, and Oreo.

You did not have to know Don all that well to appreciate what a good man he was and to know that the Don McClurg’s of this world come around very, very seldom. Therein lies the sense of loss for all of us who were fortunate enough to have know him.

He will be missed greatly by his wife, son and daughter, brother and numerous friends and family. Please join us after the graveside for pizza and beer at the Margret Cowden Clubhouse inside The Village of Manor Park 5212 Sinclair Ave. Midland, TX

A public viewing for Donald will be held Monday, April 3, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ellis Resthaven Funeral Home, 4616 N Big Spring Street, Midland, Texas 79705. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 10:30 AM, 4616 N Big Spring Street, Midland, Texas 79705. A burial/ graveside service will occur Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Fairview Cemetery, 1620 N A St, Midland, Texas.
