Darline Lillie (Miller) Smith, 80, of Midland, TX passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2011, with the full graces of the Catholic Church. Darline and her husband Daryl had been residents at the Vogel Center of Manor Park where they received gentle care for the past two years. They were members of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Darline was born on September 20, 1930 in South Sioux City, NE, the daughter of H. Burl and Lillie E. (Laird) Miller. She attended school in South Sioux, graduating from South Sioux City High School in 1948, where she met her lifelong companion, Daryl L. Smith. Darline and Daryl were married December 30, 1950, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Sioux City. They made their home first in Lincoln, NE, where Daryl was finishing college, and then in Lyons, NE, Perry , IA, and Omaha, NE, and finally Midland, TX where they had lived since 1972. Darline’s career was being a mom, and she was an accomplished seamstress, and loved to crochet and garden.
Darline was preceded in death by her husband on July 12, 2010, and by her parents, her daughter-in-law Lisa Loveless Smith, her granddaughter Stephanie.
Darline is survived by her 9 children, daughter Liane (Tony) Gulizia of Longmont, CO; daughter Cindy (Jerry) O’Hagan of Advance, NC; son Rev. David Smith, S.J., of Griswold, IA; daughter Shari (Greg) Folger of Midland, TX; son Bryan (Sandy) Smith of Carrollton, TX; son Allan Smith, DDS of Bellevue, NE; son Lance (Shari) Smith of Midland, TX; son Danny (Mary) Smith, DDS of Papillion, NE; and daughter Susie (Patrick) Van Deventer of Grapevine, TX; 27 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren; three brothers Marvin (Ella) Miller of South Sioux City; Melvin (Joyce) Miller of Bloomington, MN; Bill (Jane) Miller of South Sioux City; two sisters Charlyne (Ron) Cameron of Allen, TX; Karen (Don) Gatzemeyer of South Sioux City, and an uncle Jacque (Marian) Miller, and 2 sisters-in-law Dee (Leo Pat) Engel, Jo (Ray) Jones, both of South Sioux, and a brother-in-law Jerry (Charlotte) Smith, DDS of Bennington, NE.
Services will be held in South Sioux City, NE, wake Wednesday, March 16, 7:00 PM at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, Funeral Mass Thursday, March 17, 10:30 AM St. Michael Catholic Church, burial at St. Michael Cemetery immediately following.
