Charles Foster Powell never knew when to give up. He would love you no matter how much you didn’t deserve it. He would help you no matter how much he had to sacrifice. And you would never once hear him complain about it. Charlie Powell was a true man of God and the finest example of a husband, a father, and a grandfather.
He passed away in his home early Saturday morning, June 1st, 2013. He was 68 years old. After a three year battle with cancer, Charlie finally left his “work clothes” behind and is now watching over his family and friends in heaven.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Powell, his four daughters, Christi Van Zandt and husband, Doug Van Zandt, Channon Overby and husband, Joe Overby, Caryn Powell, and Pam Smith, and his son, Michael Powell and wife, Jalyn Powell. His two brothers, Lloyd Powell and Pat Powell, and sister, Linda Barrow also survive him. Charlie left behind eleven grandchildren and many more that affectionately called him, “Pampaw.”
Born in 1944, Charlie was a native Midlander who attended Midland High School and joined the Army at the age of 19 in 1964. After serving his country in Germany, he returned home and fell in love with Cheryl Fern Garner. They married in 1971 and enjoyed a beautiful 42 years together.
Charlie owned and operated Sundown Market with his two brothers for 40 years before selling the business in 2011. He was a hard worker and a jokester. During the final months, Charlie would be the first to crack a joke and put everyone at ease. It was his life-loving and faith-filled spirit that kept him and all of his family going.
A visitation will be held at Ellis Funeral Home Sunday, June 2nd, from 6 - 8pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Charlie’s honor to the Joshua Fund, in memory of his love for Israel (P.O. Box 2589, Monument, Colorado, 80132-2589). A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 3rd, at 10:00am at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
