She was born Betty Jo Lee on May 14, 1935, in Dallas, Texas to Frank Charles Lee and Ruth Elizabeth (Chapman) Lee. Betty primarily grew up in Grapevine, Texas. She was the youngest of 5 children. Betty attended school until her father passed away when she was 13 years old. Being the youngest and the last one at home, Betty went to work to help make ends meet. Betty ended up being the primary caregiver of her mother until her passing in 1969. Betty was a good and faithful daughter and sister.
Betty married Donald Wayne Cobb on August 10, 1974. Don loved Betty deeply for 48 years. They had many wonderful years together, raising their blended family. Between them, they had 9 children: 8 daughters and 1 son. With so many children, it’s no surprise they also shared the joy of having 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Don saw to it that Betty was well cared for right up to the end of her days.
Betty and Don moved from New Mexico to Midland in 1975. Through the years, the pair acquired a few businesses in town. Betty was never afraid to step out in faith and try something new or learn a new skill. Learning to take care of her family at a young age made her resilient like that. She was a hard worker and did anything necessary to take care of her kids and family. One business Betty opened and operated with her eldest daughter, Dawn, was a gift shop named The Sugar Plum Tree. It was a beautiful little shop, and all the granddaughters have fond memories of spending time there. Betty was beautiful and elegant and loved helping others feel that way too. As Betty’s youngest daughter, Kim, approached high school graduation and Betty was facing the prospect of an empty nest, she decided to go to cosmetology school and earn a nail tech license. This was one of Betty’s favorite careers of all the many jobs she had in her life. She so enjoyed her clients and each one became a dear friend to her. Betty was a meticulous nail tech, and she had her own little salon in her home where she worked diligently until 2010 when dementia started to steal her memory.
Betty and Don were also avid golfers. They had club memberships at Ranchland Country Club and Green Tree Country Club. They loved playing a round or two on the weekends and often played together in couples’ tournaments. Betty was also a member of the Green Tree Women’s Ladies Golf Association. For many years, you could find Betty on the golf course on Wednesday mornings. She loved her golfing pals, and they had lots of fun times together.
Betty loved reading romance novels, playing Solitaire, Gin Rummy, Skip-Bo, watching Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with her family. She was also a very talented leg-wrestler back in her younger days. Betty was a great cook and was famously known (among the family at least) for her delicious cornbread dressing. She was a kind soul and dearly loved by many friends and family. She could hardly go anywhere in town without seeing someone she knew. She will be remembered for her fiery red hair, her zest for life, and the sacrificial love she had for her children.
Betty moved to Legacy Ranch Memory Care in July of 2018. She was lovingly cared for by the kind and caring staff there. We’d like to specifically thank Kimberly, Jennifer, Frank, and Madison as well as the rest of her care team. Additionally, Heart to Heart Hospice has been giving Betty extra time and attention since Fall 2021. Thank you especially to Carolyn and all the precious friends from Heart to Heart.
